Car-nar-von was the conclusion of my month-long residency with Carn, Caernarfon (March 2018). The residency looked at me in search of the real town. I wanted to investigate the town and put on a performance that connected to a family holiday with relatives that concluded with us be dumped in Bundaberg, Queensland. Three days’ drive from flight home in Sydney.
I found the real town not just the tourist part around the castle. Such a wealth of history friendly faces and a will to survive. As the work documented on my take over of the Carn Instagram. The words I performed at the end were a trilogy of response to My Uncle who played the main part in leaving us who we have never spoken to since (this happened in 1996). As part of the residency, I approached the local community to take part in a photography workshop.
The three poems raise the question of longing distance and unanswered questions. I also invited Welsh Musician and performance poet Sian Miriam and poet Rhys Trimble to contribute. I found it pretty brutal to perform. Sometimes wearing your heart on your sleeve can have positive effects, it’s just how you control it?
I found out about the closure of Oriel Wrecsam (probably may favourite gallery) that i have such a connection with. It gave me my first chance to grab at the slippy old balloon of the art bubble dream back in 2008 on selection for the Wrecsam Open. But now revitalised and mowing into pastures new its last Hara was Art Vend. The project selected artist to submit 50 pieces of work to go to vending machines placed around Wrecsam over the next few months. The work I submitted took the form of a Digital Protection locked away in the little plastic casual. I have an Exhibition coming up from 25 April – 5 July 2015 alongside Susan Williams and Wendy Leah Dawson. I have been documenting the many signs of Tremeirchion for such a small village about 1 square mile with over 30 signs that I have managed to document
I’m also making a return to my third Helfa Gelf this year. I will be once again camped out in Haus Of Helfa, Llandudno after receiving confirmation of my work been selected. Think poems rubber bands and 360 degrees
Ffloc has been selected to work on a 3 week residency as part of connect 2 at Aberystwyth Arts Centre during May which will entail a visually projected element and poetry. This is going to be a massive challenge but great fun. This is to evolve into a bigger project
Not long until 19th to 21st September LLAWN – Llandudno Arts Weekend I will be over at Haus of Helfa with my projection in response to Llandudno’ lost buildings. My short film in response to Gareth Griffith work in situ with his installation and the spoken word of Rhys Trimble. Also due to the Response my video for the Llandudno IPP event My Tedder house Lost space will also be on show to the general public.
I was asked to respond to some of the history of Tedder House in Llandudno for Ideas People Places, working alongside Marc Rees, Lisa Carter and Helfa Gelf. Now standing empty stripped back to the bare bricks, all the that remains of the old R.A.F.A Club are stories and a few artefacts amongst the surviving members. After meeting with several people who were involved with the old club I was able to piece together a few memories and bring some of this once great town instution back to life. The work was projected onto a trophy cabinet from the old club on the opening night, and club members were invited to see it, there will be another opportunity to see the film in September during Helfa Gelf.
In times of austerity councils like to take large a chunk of cash for condemning what they call derelict houses. They have done it with many parts of Liverpool now. Edge lane, parts of Anfield and Smithdown Road to name a few!
Many of the terraces have gone but ls left is dystopian with all street signs removed and a feel of 1984
However in Croxteth Princess park area are the “Welsh Streets” due to being built and lived in c.1880 by skilled Welsh workers. Welsh immigrants built a large percentage of buildings around Liverpool in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The homes were named after places in Wales. Ringo Starr lived in Madryn Street as a child.
I was lucky enough to pay a visit to the Welsh houses on the weekend that some of the streets were actually saved
‘Llandudno welcomes you’ as the sign says reaching the brow to he hill at Penrynside. Always sticks in my mind. Such an iconic sign for the area, hence its recent renovation. However when all the glitz and pomp post extravaganza ad summer merriment. Clandudno becomes a cold lonely place until march. In simple terms we still go about our ways just with more parking spaces. The contestant for me is the sea. It’s always here, always different! The Horizon line never changes. Always when i look out to see it makes me think of Mark Rothko. it cuts you in half
My response to the empty space that was Dolgarrog Aluminium works and the pride of the people who worked there. The work was part of Haus of Helfa for Llawn01. Taken from an 8mm cine film projection found at a car boot sale and over 3 hrs of conversation with John ‘Brickie’ Roberts. Then projected on the old Canteen wall at Dolgarrog Aluminium works.
