Car-nar-von was the conclusion of my month-long residency with Carn, Caernarfon (March 2018). The residency looked at me in search of the real town. I wanted to investigate the town and put on a performance that connected to a family holiday with relatives that concluded with us be dumped in Bundaberg, Queensland. Three days’ drive from flight home in Sydney.
I found the real town not just the tourist part around the castle. Such a wealth of history friendly faces and a will to survive. As the work documented on my take over of the Carn Instagram. The words I performed at the end were a trilogy of response to My Uncle who played the main part in leaving us who we have never spoken to since (this happened in 1996). As part of the residency, I approached the local community to take part in a photography workshop.
The three poems raise the question of longing distance and unanswered questions. I also invited Welsh Musician and performance poet Sian Miriam and poet Rhys Trimble to contribute. I found it pretty brutal to perform. Sometimes wearing your heart on your sleeve can have positive effects, it’s just how you control it?
I was asked to respond to some of the history of Tedder House in Llandudno for Ideas People Places, working alongside Marc Rees, Lisa Carter and Helfa Gelf. Now standing empty stripped back to the bare bricks, all the that remains of the old R.A.F.A Club are stories and a few artefacts amongst the surviving members. After meeting with several people who were involved with the old club I was able to piece together a few memories and bring some of this once great town instution back to life. The work was projected onto a trophy cabinet from the old club on the opening night, and club members were invited to see it, there will be another opportunity to see the film in September during Helfa Gelf.
I went out to Sicily to photograph. While i was there I soon realised that must start film and using time-lapse to further my experience. This video was shot free hand. The poem was written while I was there. The sounds in the background are the tuna steaks we bought cooking on the Barbecue The ambient sound is from the supermarket we went to
Well yesterday day was about getting image and posters ready for the exhibition i have got 16 pil boxes a good effort for 1 week. I have 6 prints of Great Ormegun sight. I did a time lapse projection but i cant seem to upload it 😦

Then we had cake
So off to pick up the prints and hang the show. Wish me luck!!!!
I can highly recommend the tagliatelle alla Bolognese if your passing this way. They pick de herb fresh off the tree. Claudio taught us how to say good food in masculine and feminine after 3 men helped us select desert. I like the fact they would not let you mix flavours.
I had a really special day yesterday. Firstly seeing the italian coast, the toe tip if you imagine the boot really left an impression on me. It’s not very often you would get to see such an iconic land feature. That is unless down the road you see a volcano!
Spent the afternoon in Catania only had a short spell in the fantastic little city. All the streets are flagged with lava rock and its many Baroque buildings. It was so hot in the street felt like the heat was coming upwards.
Had a little walk this morning around the olive plantations were people work the land due to the heat
And saw this cool little truck i think they must have scooter engines in them.
Still sat under the same tree strangely it’s called a word press tree 😉
Settled in well yesterday even if i had phone my data roaming on for a bit 😦
Chatted lots with Allie she is an artist from chicago she cool although my dull sit Widnesian tones confuse sometimes.
Actually sat in the sun yesterday which was novel for me. I ve got a watch now so i must get a tan.
Recreated a clash song today ‘i got lost in supermarket’ even Allie said it was bigger than anything she had seen in the states. Then the fun began. I got to the till with the apples i had bought. I didn’t realise you had put your own code on from a register. So pulling that dum english face we have all pulled due to losing it in translation the kind lady swiftly behind me in the que whisked my apples off to bar code them for me. Scusi 🙂
We went to the village restaurant last night. It was great even if the manager of the gaff did come over and shake my hand. He tried to get me to pay for all the bill 🙂
