Car-nar-von was the conclusion of my month-long residency with Carn, Caernarfon (March 2018). The residency looked at me in search of the real town. I wanted to investigate the town and put on a performance that connected to a family holiday with relatives that concluded with us be dumped in Bundaberg, Queensland. Three days’ drive from flight home in Sydney.
I found the real town not just the tourist part around the castle. Such a wealth of history friendly faces and a will to survive. As the work documented on my take over of the Carn Instagram. The words I performed at the end were a trilogy of response to My Uncle who played the main part in leaving us who we have never spoken to since (this happened in 1996). As part of the residency, I approached the local community to take part in a photography workshop.
The three poems raise the question of longing distance and unanswered questions. I also invited Welsh Musician and performance poet Sian Miriam and poet Rhys Trimble to contribute. I found it pretty brutal to perform. Sometimes wearing your heart on your sleeve can have positive effects, it’s just how you control it?
I found out about the closure of Oriel Wrecsam (probably may favourite gallery) that i have such a connection with. It gave me my first chance to grab at the slippy old balloon of the art bubble dream back in 2008 on selection for the Wrecsam Open. But now revitalised and mowing into pastures new its last Hara was Art Vend. The project selected artist to submit 50 pieces of work to go to vending machines placed around Wrecsam over the next few months. The work I submitted took the form of a Digital Protection locked away in the little plastic casual. I have an Exhibition coming up from 25 April – 5 July 2015 alongside Susan Williams and Wendy Leah Dawson. I have been documenting the many signs of Tremeirchion for such a small village about 1 square mile with over 30 signs that I have managed to document
I’m also making a return to my third Helfa Gelf this year. I will be once again camped out in Haus Of Helfa, Llandudno after receiving confirmation of my work been selected. Think poems rubber bands and 360 degrees
Ffloc has been selected to work on a 3 week residency as part of connect 2 at Aberystwyth Arts Centre during May which will entail a visually projected element and poetry. This is going to be a massive challenge but great fun. This is to evolve into a bigger project
I was asked to respond to some of the history of Tedder House in Llandudno for Ideas People Places, working alongside Marc Rees, Lisa Carter and Helfa Gelf. Now standing empty stripped back to the bare bricks, all the that remains of the old R.A.F.A Club are stories and a few artefacts amongst the surviving members. After meeting with several people who were involved with the old club I was able to piece together a few memories and bring some of this once great town instution back to life. The work was projected onto a trophy cabinet from the old club on the opening night, and club members were invited to see it, there will be another opportunity to see the film in September during Helfa Gelf.
I grew up in an industrial northern town. In the 1980s the industry left…
British industry underwent a period of turbulent change during the 1980s as a result of new government policies. The Thatcher administration then advanced the concept of ‘The Industrial Estate’, which became an out of town regeneration scheme that every town wanted. As an island, there is only so much small industry our infrastructure can support.
Often when an area receives European funding, it is designated as an inhabitable Brownfield Site renovation scheme. Such official terminology can be perceived as disingenuous and becomes a metaphor for deprivation. I aim to document the junctions and roads of the areas where the jobs never came.
For just under two years now I have been working with the group Ffoto Alternative and planning their biggest exhibition to date at Bodelwyddan Castle. The work was to document the 25th anniversary of the castle. Also alongside our work we was lucky to be paired with the National Portrait Gallery who brought a selection of work up from 1988 this featured photos of The Stone Roses, Run DMC, Steven Hawkins to name a few. A great honour to be alongside such images of icons. The work that I put into the show was seen first on google maps. I noticed that there was an old drive way to the castle. Back in February I went to document the trees. This would then be placed in a filling cabinet in the exhibition. that you would walk through with your hands. The first image was pixellated the last image in-front of the castle was clear to give a sense of distance. I like the fact the filing cabinet was closed so only the keen-eyed viewer would even know it was there.
Early in the year I applied to be part of a project at Sale Arts Centre through Arts Council England. On selection the course ran over spring/summer. It was structured around artistic talks from established artist Len Grant and Mishka Henner, group discussion and planning for the show. We decided as group to call it ‘Risk’. Which then set off on individual paths to create individual bodies of work. Having a few ideas the one that had the most relevance to me was first evolved in my little brain while visiting the Valleys in South Wales and decimation of culture, heritage and David Cameron favourite word “Community”. In the 80s the Tories swapped everyone’s jobs for crummy industrial estates, so rather than have a trade you can go and work making pizza or box toilet rolls through an agency. The bureaucrats dream!
The problem is they have built that many industrial estates in the North West and North Wales they don’t have enough business to fill their over saturated dream! I took it on myself to find as many of these sites as I could and document them. In this body of work i hope to the finical ‘Risk’ we are hindered with?
After My work for the Conwy County Council on the Colwyn Bay Youth Skate competition. I was asked to do so more work for them. I was again approached by Sharon Campbell head of Colwyn Bay Youth Centre. She wanted to make a flyer for the new facilities that have been installed at the Club. The images where to be taken during the youth club on the thursday night. The images had to be vibrant and look attractive to the young people of Colwyn Bay. Here a few of the images. I’m limited to the amount of images i can show. The young people on the flyer had parental consent forms signed.
